The dome moved about 1/8 of an inch each time.  It was then loose enough for me to twist off.  I had read on another site about a guy using a rubber mallet to do the same thing.  I didn’t have a rubber mallet, but I figured a show might work.  See attached dome and shoe! That could move two prongs (like large metal staples) inwards, thereby releasing the shade. Only problem is, tonight (it’s 15 years old so I’ve done this many many times before) the base pulled away from the ceiling as well; the one screw attaching the base to the ceiling came out and it will be nearly impossible to thread it back into its tiny hole while holding onto the base and a screwdriver!!! A 1/4 turn of the valve in the opposite direction will close the valve, causing the flame or mantles to go out. There are a couple of screws in the ceiling and keyhole type mounting holes in the fixture that I am supposed to align but I just can’t get them to align. Help.
